9 more sports hostels to come up in Uttarakhand

DEHRADUN: To provide a major boost to sports scenario in Uttarakhand, the sports department, has announced to establish nine more hostels for sportspersons in the state. The announcement made on the occasion of National Sports Day on Saturday has spread cheer among players.

At present, there are six sports hostels in Uttarakhand and the number will go up to 15 after the new ones are constructed. Significantly, the sports department has given special emphasis to women players as five hostels out of the total nine will be constructed for women across the state.

Each hostel will have a capacity to accommodate 20-25 sportspersons. The budget to build these sports hostels has been sanctioned as per the district plan.

Under the boys' category, a hostel for volleyball players will be set up at Chamoli, while for athletes at Udham Singh Nagar. Another boys' hostel for boxers will be established at Pithoragarh and a hostel for table tennis players at Tehri.

For women sportspersons, a hostel for hockey players will come up at Haridwar, while another for badminton players will be established at Almora, which is already considered a hub of badminton in Uttarakhand. Likewise, a hostel for women boxers will be constructed at Champawat and another for football players at Uttarkashi. In a first, a sports hostel for Taekwondo players will also come up at Bageshwar.

Shedding light on the endeavour, Ajay Agarwal, deputy director, sports department, told TOI, "The sports department has taken an in-principle decision to open new sports hostels across Uttarakhand. The sports hostels will house sportspersons of different disciplines and will enable them to undergo training."

Agarwal said sports infrastructure was already in place at a majority of places where the sports hostels had been proposed. "The hostels will be ready in the next one year," he claimed.

Meanwhile, sports minister Dinesh Agarwal while attending a National Sports Day function at Maharana Pratap Sports College gave away a cash prize of Rs 10,000 to sportspersons who performed exceptionally well during the Khel Mela held on November 9, 2014.
