Australian man arrested for using satellite phone in Uttarakhand

An Australian man who hails from Queensland was been arrested from Badrinath on Monday for allegedly using a satellite telephone. The 46-year-old man have been identified as Stuart Ian Scott.

According to Deepak Rawat, a station officer at Badrinath in Uttarakhand, said that Scott was arrested after authorities detected the use of a satellite telephone two days ago, in the locality of the yoga and meditation ashram where he was staying.

The incident happened when Scott was using phone which got detected near sensitive Himalayan border with China. When the officials questioned Scott, he said that he is unaware about ban on satellite phone. While, the other people present there said that they had informed Scott about about ban on using satellite phone in India. According to Telegraph and Wireless Act, using of satellite phones, without Government authorisation can be illegal. A case has been registered against him under the relevant section of Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act.
