Dalit IIT-Roorkee student 'falls' from building, dies

DEHRADUN: A third-year dalit student of IIT-Roorkee died after he reportedly fell from the fifth floor of his hostel in Uttarakhand's Hardwar district on Sunday evening.

Police said 21-year-old Manish Kumar, BTech (computer science) student, returned to his room in Radhakrishan hostel at the IIT campus after attending tutorials around 5.30pm. Later in the evening, other students rushed out of their rooms after hearing a loud sound and found Manish was lying in a pool of blood, the police said. Manish — who was from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh — was immediately rushed to hospital where he was declared dead.

Roorkee superintendent of police Roshan Lal Sharma told TOI that IIT-Roorkee security officer K P Singh informed cops about the incident and a team was immediately sent to the IIT-Roorkee campus.

"Preliminary investigations reveal that the victim committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the hostel. He was mentally unstable. We are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the death and are waiting for the post-mortem report," Sharma said.

Manish's father, retired soldier Rajendra Kumar, accused IIT-Roorkee authorities of harassing his son because he was a dalit.

Sharma said senior administrative officials and faculty members in the IIT campus told the police that Manish had been undergoing treatment in the Roorkee Army Hospital.
