Raids for arrest of Prasad being conducted

Dehra Dun, Mar 9 (PTI) Raids are being conducted to arrest former Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL) Chairman Yogendra Prasad, facing corruption charges, an official today said.

Vigilance sleuths raided Prasad''s residence at Dehra Dun last night but could not find him, Vigilance Superintendent of Police Brijendra Juyal said, adding the team would now be sent to his Noida house.

The raids for arrest of Prasad are being conducted after vigilance succeeded in getting the stay vacated on his arrest by Uttarakhand High Court last week on the ground that he was not cooperating in the investigations.

Prasad, a former NHPC Chairman, was appointed as an advisor to Uttarakhand government in 2006. Later he took over as Chairman of UJVNL, a state government agency for power generation in 2007. However, in 2010, he was removed from the post as the government said he had already attained 65 years, the age limit fixed for heading a corporation in the hill state.

As the allegations of corruption against Prasad came to light, the government handed over the inquiry to vigilance which lodged several cases against him for misusing his position in releasing payments worth crores of rupees to various companies without verification of work entrusted to them.
