Six people died and three others were injured today when their jeep veered off the road and fell into the Alaknanda river near Kaudiala on the Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway in New Tehri district of Uttarakhand.
The jeep was on its way from Pauri to Dehradun, the state capital, when the mishap occurred, police said.
According to sub-inspector D S Kathait, the jeep went out of control and rolled down into the river. Three people, including two women, died on the spot while three succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital.
The injured were taken by 108 ambulance service to hospital, he said. They had fallen out of the vehicle while it rolled down the hilly slope.
As the vehicle was still to be traced, more casualtes could not be ruled out, he said.
Among the deceased only driver Manoj Rawat, 35, (Mailai village, Chipalgad) and Chhuma Devi, 60, (Semalth) have been identified while efforts were on to establish the identity of others, Mr Kathait said.
He said rescue operations were were suspended late this evening due to darkness and would be resumed early tomorrow morning.
