Terming it to be against the state's interests, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has urged the Centre not to declare the area between Gomukh and Uttarakashi along the bank of river Ganga as eco-sensitive zone as it will hit livelihood of the locals.

In a letter to Union Minister of State for Forests and Environment Jayanthi Natrajan, Nishank said the centre should not issue any notification to declare the area between Gomukh and Uttarakashi as 'eco-sensitive zone' in the larger interest of the hill state and the local population.

"A population of 91,713 living in two cities and 118 villages along the 135-km-long stretch between Gomukh and Uttarakashi earn their livelihood mainly through agriculture and tourism. The Centre's move will severely affect their livelihood," the CM said.

The proposed notification will also adversely affect the business of nearly 200 hotels, motels and inns operating in the area, which received nearly four lakh tourists every year, he said.

Pointing out that the state being home to many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries is already facing several restrictions as part of environment conservation, Nishank said there is no need to put more restrictions on the people.

The CM said Ganga River Basin Authority and Uttarakashi Regulatory Authority are already in place for conservation of environment and protection of river Ganga and so there is no need to issue any notification for declaring the area as eco-sensitive zone.

He said the imposition of new restrictions might agitate people and there is a possibility that they might take the law in their hand.
