Man held, 11 cylinders seized: A resident of Gandhi Gram was arrested by the police for illegally filling gas cylinders. The police recovered 11 cylinders from his possession. The Kotwali police said he had been identified as Sant Ram. The police said he used to fill small cylinders from big cylinders illegally. The police acted after a man caught fire while filling the gas. The man was seriously injured in the incident and was admitted to a hospital. Following this the police got to know from local residents that Sant Ram had been doing this trade. The police raided his house and arrested him. The police also seized 11 cylinders from the place of the accused.

Bank Unions hold demonstration: Members of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) demonstrated in front of the State Bank of India on the Rajpur Road on Thursday against the privatisation of banks and announced to go on a statewide strike on Friday after their talks with the Finance Secretary, Central Government, failed. BP Mamgai, convener, said, the district cooperative banks and rural banks will also join in the strike.

Blood component machine functional: Mahant Devinder Das of the Guru Ram Rai Trust on Thursday inaugurated the blood component machine at Mahant Indiresh Hospital, whihc has become the second hospital after the Doon Hospital to acquire the machine. It has been installed at the hospital’s blood bank. The machine became operational after the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued the licence.


Timber smugglers fell 2 sheesham trees

The officials of the Forest Department have registered a case against certain timber smugglers charging them with the illegal felling of two trees of sheesham and decamping with the timber. According to sources, the two trees had been felled in the Patrampur Range forests. Earlier, some smugglers had reportedly chopped trees of sal and eucalyptus from the same range last month. It was on Monday that the two trees were felled. On seeing a team of the Forest Department personnel, the smugglers fled from the spot carrying timber with them. They left behind some wood and a bicycle. Two of the smugglers have been identified as Kashmir Singh and Bindu of Maldhanchaur while the others could not be identified as they had their faces covered with cloth.

Identity cards to be issued to rickshaw-pullers: The authorities in the Kashipur area of Udham Singh Nagar have decided to issue identity cards to the rickshaw-pullers and those operating handcarts in the town. These cards are to be issued to them after a verification of their antecedents by the police. These cards are to be issued by August 15 following which those rickshaw-pullers and cart operators who dot not possess the identity cards would not be allowed to operate in the town. This decision comes following instances of certain elements coming to the area to operate rickshaws and carts after having committed crimes elsewhere.

Haldwani man arrested for liquor smuggling: The Jaspur police has nabbed a resident of Haldwani for trying to smuggle liquor into Uttarakhand. According to sources, the accused identified as Ravi of Gajpura locality of Haldwani was nabbed at a check post set up following a tip-off given by an informer. A large quantity of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) was recovered from him as he was trying to smuggle it into the state in a bus. He is learnt to have brought the liquor from Haryana.

Two bodies found in Nainital district: Two bodies had been found in different parts of Nainital district over the past 24 hours. In the first instance a youth was found dead in a room of a hotel in the Railway Bazar area of Haldwani. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Mohan Ram of Patal Bhuvneshwar. A bottle of pesticide was also recovered from the spot which has led to the assumption that he had committed suicide. Further investigations in the matter have revealed that the victim had left his house on Tuesday and had told the members of his family that he was going to Haridwar in search of employment. In the second instance the body of a woman was recovered from an isolated spot in Bhawali. The deceased, said to be in her mid-thirties, is yet to be identified.

Villagers tie boy to tree for 4 hours: An instance of villagers taking law into their own hands has come to light at Chhoi village near Ramnagar. According to the reports, a 14-year-old boy was tied to a jackfruit tree for four hours and questioned by certain villagers after he was allegedly nabbed while carrying out a theft along with his cousin in a shop in the village. Reports say that the 14-year-old boy was let off with a warning. His cousin had managed to flee from the spot when the boy was nabbed.
