Uttarkashi locals clash with cops after girl dies in custody

A teenaged girl in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district died after spending a night in police custody, sparking allegations that she may have been tortured and inciting locals to violence and arson in protest.

Preliminary reports said 16-year-old Anchal was taken into police custody after her maternal uncle had eloped with another girl of the Purola area.

Police sources said Anchal's father allegedly had a role in the elopment of the maternal uncle, and the cops picked her up when they went to her residence but failed to find her parents.

After remaining in their custody for one full night, the girl was dropped home by the police on Wednesday morning.

Shortly, however, she began to feel uneasy, and died before she could reach hospital.

This angered the people of her township, who took to the streets, stoning government vehicles, destroying property, demanding stern action against the policemen involved.

A couple of protesters were injured in theclash. A posse of police personnel have been deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.

Chief minister Vijay Bahuguna has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

"We will not spare anybody in case anyone is found guilty," said Bahuguna.
