NH-87 chokes after heavy rains in Uttarakhand

Amid incessant rain commuters experienced a tough time here on Friday as vehicular traffic remained disrupted on National Highway-87 near Bhumiyadhar (Jyolikot)and Jaurasi due to boulders and debris.

Incessant rain for the past few days has only worsened smooth flow of vehicles on different roads of the Kumaon region. Passengers particularly long distant ones remained stuck for over a couple of hours  on the NH-87 near  Jaurasi that falls  between  Bhawali and Almora. But the road near Bhumiyadhar could not be cleared till late evening.

Amid incessant rainfall debris accompanied by huge boulders, rocks caused road block near Jaurasi on Friday noon. However, it took the NH officials over an hour to clear the debris.

Keeping in view a fragile nature of road on this stretch between Jyolikot and  Kwarab of this  national highwhay, we have already deployed two JCBs. So the advance preparations greatly helped us clear the road within an hour, said D S Nabiyal, Executive Engineer, National High way, while talking to The Pioneer.
However, as soon as the road became clear, the vehicular traffic also resumed to both sides i.e. Haldwani and Almora, he informed.

It is to note that Jaurashi that is about 30 km away ,towards Haldwani from Almora and  about 25 km away towards Almora from Bhowali. Whenever there is a road block like  situation arises on this stretch, it affects transport services to Pithoragarh and other districts including Bageshwar.

In the meanwhile, road block also occurred at Bhumiyadhar near Jyolikot this afternoon throwing vehicular traffic towards Haldwani and Nainital out of gear.

Heavy mode vehicles particularly long distant buses coming from Haldwani side or from Bhowali side,  remained struck on this stretch as mostly  heavy mode vehicles are plied on this road from Bhowali side towards Haldwani or Nainital, while medium mode vehicles can also go to Haldwani via Bhimtal from Bhowali side.

Following these roadblocks long distant passengers were the most concerned as they were of the view that they won’t be able to reach their destinations on time if the road is not cleared as soon as possible.

In the meanwhile, vehicular traffic also remained disrupted in urban areas particularly in Haldwani , Nainital or Ramnagar to name a few due to  water clogged rods, choked drains following the incessant rainfall.
Among other roads, the Haldwani –Kaladhungi Road seems to be worst hit due to the rainwater which remains clogged on the road, making it hard for vehicles particularly medium mode ones like car, taxis, three-wheelers, two wheelers to get through on this busy road.
