Ground Water Resource Centre to be established in Uttarakhand: Chief Secy

Uttarakhand Chief Secretary AK Jain said that ground water resources were being depleted by uncontrolled exploitation of water resources. He said that it has become imperative to manage this precious resource with utmost care. Chairing the meeting of Ground Water Management organised by Central Ground Water Board on Thursday, Jain said that a Ground Water Resource Centre would be established in the State.

He said that this centre would carry out aquifer mapping for groundwater in all districts. He observed that normally it was seen that water resources were exploited without any assessments and later water scarcity was experienced. He said that under the national project, aquifer mapping would be conducted in 7700 square kilometre area in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts under 12th Five Year Plan.

The mapping would be conducted in the remaining districts under 13th Five Year Plan. Jain said that considering difficult topography of Uttarakhand it was essential to conserve water and in such conditions the national project would prove beneficial for the State.
