Mussoorie/Uttarkashi, June 23
People, especially farmers, heaved a sigh of relief as heavy rain today lashed the Garhwal region, including Mussoorie, Tehri and Uttarkashi.
Motorists, pedestrians and tourists were caught unawares due to the sudden downpour in Mussoorie. Many areas in the town came under a sheet of water.
Two-wheeler riders parked their vehicles on the roads and crammed into bus shelters and wherever they could find space to protect themselves from the rain.
Woolens and warm clothes are out once again in the region as the rain has brought down the mercury levels.
Meanwhile, the level of the Ganga has witnessed an increase following rain that continued for more than two hours in Uttarkashi. There are reports of snowfall in the higher reaches of the district.
Farmers from the district said this rain would help them in the sowing season.
Chandradev Uniyal, a farmer from Uttarkashi, said they were finding it difficult to begin sowing in fields due to the lack of water.
He said most of the irrigation canals were damaged during the 2013 disaster and were yet to be repaired.
On the other hand, the Met department has sounded an alert as more rain is expected in the state in the next 24 hours.
Char Dham-bound pilgrims have halted at Uttarkashi and would proceed further only after an improvement in the weather.
