Proud of being Uttarakhandi: Urvashi Rautela

The 18-year-old model, who will represent India at the Miss Universe 2012 pageant, was at her home town Kotdwara for few hours before leaving for Mumbai.

Her father Manvar Singh runs a medical shop at Kotdwara while her mother Meera operates a beauty parlor. Urvashi studied at the local DAV School.

She said that all the credits for her success go to her parents who encouraged her dreams.

Urvashi said that former Miss Universe Susmita Sen, who owns the rights to send delegates from India to the Miss Universe pageant from 2010 onwards through her project 'I Am She ? Miss Universe India', told her that she has all the ingredients to win the international title.

"I am trying my best to get the crown for my country," Urvashi said.

Last week, Urvashi Rautela, a 17-year-old from Dehradun, bagged the Asian Super Model India 2011 contest, from among 16 contestants (aged 16-24) selected from Delhi/NCR and Mumbai, to represent India at the Asian Super Model Contest 2011. The finale at The Grand, Vasant Kunj, in Delhi, was a rather blingy affair, with lots of dance and music.

Clad in a blue Satya Paul sari, Rautela looked like a million bucks as stepped on to the stage. Rautela says she has been a mathematics-chemistry junkie all her life, until two years ago, when she won her first beauty contest title in Mumbai. The first and second runners-up were Shraddha Pandey and Bobby Layal respectively.

Model Carol Gracias, who was on the selection panel said, “The girls were all lovely. But I think one thing that separated the winners from those who couldn’t make it was confidence.” On the other hand, the girls found her presence unnerving.

Besides Gracias, Sanjeev Mohanty, MD of Benetton group; Sachin Sharma, Swarowski group India head; and Sahil Shroff, model and actor, were also on the panel, among others.

The three winners will go to Nanjing, China, for the Grand Finale on September 8, where they will compete with models from Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Colombo and Thailand, for the coveted title.
