Championship: Three cricketers who had been undergoing training under the District Sports Office at the Parade Ground have been selected in the Kendriya Vidyalaya National School Cricket team from the Dehradun region. The National School Championship will be played in Chandigarh after a seven-day camp from September 23 to 29. Neeraj Gaur (KV OLF), Deepak Bhandari and Rishiham Mishra (KV number 1 Hathibarkala) have been selected from Dehradun.

Doon Callisto Cup: The Doon Callisto Cup-2011 being organised by the Doon Callisto Club in partnership with the District Football Association will be held from September 15 to 25 at the Pavilion Ground. A total of 12 teams will contest for top honours in this football competition. All participating teams have already played knockouts and have laddered up from a gamut of 35 teams during the district cricket league.

Trenching ground: To inspect the way leading to the trenching ground located on Sahastradhara Road, Dehradun Mayor Vinod Chamoli on Wednesday visited the site. He found that the road leading to the ground was in bad condition and the garbage was lying on the roads. He asked officials to get the roads repaired so that vehicles carrying the filth could move properly. The Mayor also asked the officials to ensure that the boundary wall of the ground was constructed within a week.

Water shortage in Champawat school: An inspection at Government Primary School, Kaflag (Champawat), has revealed that there is an acute shortage of water there. The authorities told District Information Officer Yogesh Mishra that sometimes they had to lock toilets in the absence of water. Due to the water shortage, problems are also being faced while cooking the midday meal. The school also does not have proper seating facility. Children from the weaker section of society are not getting scholarships meant for them. The floors of newly constructed classrooms under the SSA have broken on account of poor construction. District Social Welfare Officer BL Arya has given an assurance to look into the issues on a priority basis.

Man fined for illegal quarrying:The Haldwani administration has imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh on a person involved in illegal quarrying. According to reports, Sarvpreet Singh had dug up his land without prior permission and was involved in selling mined material to a stone crusher. Officials carried out a surprise check on his land and seized the material that had been mined along with an excavation machine.

Tusker’s carcass found near Haldwani:The carcass of a tusker was found in a paddy field in Haida Gajjar Haripur village near Haldwani. While the exact cause of the pachyderm’s death is yet to be ascertained, it is being assumed that it might have died of electrocution. There are no injury marks to suggest any violent attack on the animal. The carcass has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Jewellery worth `3.75 lakh stolen:Miscreants decamped with jewellery worth Rs 3.75 lakh in the Kitcha area of Udham Singh Nagar district. The theft took place in the house of Anwar Salim Rizvi. Members of the family were not at home when the incident took place. Investigations are on in the matter.

Kausani residents for repair of roads: Residents of Kausani are irked over the alleged failure of the administration to get the Kausani-Baijnath and Kausani-Gwaldam roads repaired. They said the roads continued to be in poor condition. Several pine trees are hanging precariously above the roads and this can lead to a major accident any day, they added. The residents said State Bangla Road that led to various guest houses and schools was also in poor condition. They have demanded immediate repair of the roads in the area.

Landslide near Sirobgarh: The Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway was blocked on Tuesday for traffic after a landslide near Sirobgarh in Rudraprayag district. Rocks, stones and soil in large quantities came down to the road this morning due to rain in the region, official sources said. Nearly 700 vehicles carrying nearly thousands of tourists were stranded on both sides of the highway, they said. The Border Roads Organisation is trying to clear the landslide, they said.

Lightning kills two: Two women were killed while one was injured when they were struck by lightning in Tehri district of Uttarakhand, the police said on Tuesday. The women were working in the fields yesterday when the incident occurred. The two women were killed on the spot. The injured woman has been admitted to a local government hospital, the police said.

Pilgrims’ complaints: Vice-president of the Char Dham Vikas Parishad Surat Ram Nautiyal took up complaints of pilgrims bound for the Char Dham Yatra at a meeting held at Rishikesh on Tuesday. The complaints pertained to the overcharging by shopkeepers and transporters on the yatra route. He directed police officials to take legal action against the guilty. Nautiyal also inspected arrangements for the Char Dham and Hemkunt Sahib pilgrimage. He mentioned about frequent complaints regarding overcharging from passengers on Tehri, Uttarkashi and Srinagar routes.

Bithoria residents gherao office of Jal Sansthan: Irked over the alleged failure of the administration to provide them with regular water supply, residents of the Bithoria area of Haldwani gheraod the office of the Jal Sansthan and the City Magistrate. They said they had been running from pillar to post for the past four months for getting regular water supply, but to no avail. The worst affected areas are Reeva Enclave and Bengali Chuna Bhatti. Residents claimed that they had not been getting water since Holi. City Magistrate Prahash Chandra has promised to get a survey done to resolve the matter.

Unscheduled power cuts irk Rudrapur residents: Residents of the Dudhiya Nagar area of Rudrapur are agitated over unscheduled power cuts. They have sought a proper schedule for power cuts. They also staged a demonstration at the local power house. They alleged that because of the unscheduled power cuts, water supply to their area was also affected. They have also complained that they feel unsafe on account of there being no power in their locality after dark.

Plea to fill posts of driver in Uttarakhand: Government drivers affiliated to the Rajkiya Vahan Chalak Sangh have accused the government of ignoring their concerns. At a meeting held at Almora, they have demanded immediate appointments against the vacant posts of driver across the state. They have stated that on account of the government not filing the vacant posts, work load on the existing staff has increased manifold. They have also demanded the regularisation of the services of contractual employees have sought a uniform allowance and grade pay for their cadre.

SSB-trained guerrillas hold demonstration: The SSB-trained guerrillas, who have been agitating for close to 600 days in support of their demands, held a demonstration at Bageshwar. They flayed the Uttarakhand and the Central Governments for not paying heed to their genuine demands for which they had been agitating for long. They are seeking employment on the lines of the one provided to their counterparts in the north eastern states. They have threatened to march to the residence of CM Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank on June 14. They are demanding that they should be given permanent appointment along with pension benefits.

Theft at shop near police post in Haldwani: Residents of the Bareilley Road area of Haldwani were stunned to know that a shop located close to the Mandi police post had been broken into. Miscreants are learnt to have decamped with Rs 3.5 lakh along with cigarettes and cosmetics worth Rs 60, 000. The theft was discovered when the shop owner, Ram Swarup Sahu, opened his shop and found the locker open with the cash missing.

Doctor commits suicide: A 42-year-old doctor, who was working at the CMI Hospital, allegedly committed suicide on Thursday night at her residence in Adrash Colony, Subhash Nagar. The police suspects that she had injected something to kill herself. It has recovered a suicide note from the spot which said she was herself taking this step and no one should be held responsible for her death. She has been identified as Manisha, RMO at the CMI, said the police. According to cops, she was under depression as her husband had passed away some time ago. Her body was later sent to a mortuary at Doon Hospital.

UKD programme: The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) will be honouring statehood agitators at Rishikesh and Mussoorie on June 15 and June 24 respectively. Issuing a statement on Friday, UKD leader NK Gusain said the UKD as part of its campaign to honour statehood agitators had decided to honour the agitators from the Garhwal region from June 15 to June 25 while those from Kumaon had already been honoured. He said the felicitation at Rishikesh and Mussoorie was part of the Garhwal campaign.

Dharna: Uttarakhand Rajya Nirman Senani Sangh’s dharna at Dehradun District Headquarters entered third day on Friday. The protestors alleged that the statehood agitators were not getting a fair treatment. Addressing the gathering, Mathura Pant said a special camp must be organised to identify the statehood agitators, who have been left out despite being active participants in the agitation.

Five held with ancient idol: Personnel of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Almora police claim to have nabbed five persons and have recovered an ancient idol of Lord Mahavira from their possession. It is learnt that the accused were in the process of negotiating a price for the idol in the Karbala area when they were nabbed. The idol is said to be more than 100 years old. Those nabbed have ben identified as Mayank Karki, Raghvendra Singh, Dheerendra Singh Gangola, Ashish Sah and Harish Mehta.

Protests over irregular supply of LPG: The towns of Haldwani and Kitcha continue to witness public agitation over the failure of the authorities to streamline the supply of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Alleging sale of LPG on the black market and its irregular supply, the residents of the Teenpani area of Haldwani resorted to a two-hour traffic jam on the Haldwani-Bareilly road, causing a lot of problems to commuters. The vehicles had to be diverted to other routes. In Kitcha, the agitated people gheraoed a gas agency. Meanwhile, the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) has decided to open three more gas agencies at Sigri in Nainital district along with Kanda and Garur in Bageshwar district.

Delegations meet Alva: Uttarakhand Governor Margaret Alva met representatives of various organisations at the Raj Bhawan on Thursday. They brought to her notice various problems and issues pertaining to them. The first delegation that met her was from the Uttarakhand Swachakar Karamchari Sangha. Its members requested her intervention in issues pertaining to the allocation of rickshaws and boat licences along with the distribution of land to the landless people from the Valmiki community. The other delegations were from the Uttarakhand Devbhoomi Udyog Vyapar Mandal and the Uttarakhand Congress Committee.

2 killed in accident: Two youngsters were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a private bus near Sunderkhal village, near Ramnagar, on Thursday. Those killed have been identified as 29-year-old Vinod Rawat and 30-year-old Girish Rawat from Bhakrakot village in the Salt area of Almora. Their motorcycle collided head on with the bus. While Vinod is learnt to have been killed on the spot, Girish died while being treated at a government hospital. The police got the post-mortem of the deceased done and handed their bodies to their relatives. The bus driver is yet to be arrested.

Man killed over family dispute: In a gruesome incident that has come to light in the Maldhanchaur area, near Ramnagar, two persons allegedly killed the elder brother of their sister’s husband following a clash over a family dispute. Those alleged killers have been identified as Durga and Tulsi. They have been accused of killing Sher Singh. The cause of the dispute is said to be the refusal of the sister of the accused Mohanwati to go to her husband’s village in Moradabad district. The police investigations are on in the matter.

Pindari glacier: A group of 13 schoolchildren from Nagpur in Maharashtra went back after visiting the Pindari glacier in the district. They spent 16 days here. “Students were in the age group of 10 to 16 years and the aim of the trek was to teach leadership qualities to them,”said Narendra Single, coordinator of the tour.

Hemkund Sahib yatra: The police has put in place all arrangements ahead of the Hemkund Sahib yatra scheduled to start from June 1. Deputy Inspector General of Police Deepam Seth chaired a meeting of officers to chalk out plans for the yatra in Rishikesh. A large number of devotees from Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh take part in the yatra.

Mega lok adalat: Nearly 900 cases were disposed of during a mega lok adalat organised under the District Legal Services Authority here on Saturday. A fine of Rs 33 lakh was also recovered in the lok adalat. The adalat was also organised in Risihikesh and Vikasnagar.

NSS programme : Coordinating officer of the National Service Scheme Devender Singh Negi announced the results of the State National Service Scheme Programme run by HNB Garhwal University here on Sunday. The results have been handed over to all district NSS officers in Uttarakhand.

Blood donation : As many as 50 units of blood were collected by the IMA Blood Bank Society at a blood donation camp organised by Aryan Group, a youth group working for socio-cultural development, on Sunday to mark the opening of their office and a counselling Centre at Rajpur. It was inaugurated by Rajpur MLA Ganesh Joshi while the guest of honour was Chander Gupt Vikram, Chief Warden, Civil Defence.

Rain plays havoc: Sudden rain on Saturday night damaged more than two hectares of cultivable land. Rainwater also entered some of the houses, displacing eight families in Jarmalgaon of the Gangolihat area. “However, no one from the Disaster Mitigation Department or from the district administration visited the affected people to provide them relief,” said JN Pant, a villager.

Jim Corbett National Park: The Governor of the South Province of Sri Lanka would visit the Jim Corbett National Park on May 30 with her team, said Rakesh Tiwari, tehsildar of Ramnagar. Balasurya will reach Kathgodam by the Ranikhet Express and then visit Raj Bhawan, Nainital, on the same day.

Mid-day meals: Mid-day meals in a primary school near here are being cooked in a toilet despite the school having a kitchen. This fact has been revealed by an inquiry team set up by the District Education Officer of Champawat district. “This is a serious matter and the guilty will be punished,” said Mukul Sati, DEO.

Leopard caught: An injured leopard was on Wednesday caught by forest officials at Kotdwar in Pauri Garhwal district. The leopard had strayed into agriculture fields and injured itself after getting trapped in barbed wires. Later, it was taken to Chidyapur, Haridwar, rescue centre.

Dacoity case: A Uttarakhand Special Operation Group team on Wednesday arrested Manoj Bidholi from Kharkari Haridwar. Bidoli is one of the key accused in the Vishal Mega Mart dacoity case in Dehradun and has been absconding for long. The dacoity had taken place last year.

Report sought: Sushil Kumar, Chief Executive Engineer, DMC, has asked senior health officer Dr Kailash Joshi to investigate the matter related to its suspended employee, Deepak, and give its report within a week. Deepak, who was posted as a sanitary supervisor in the corporation, was suspended after one of the employees was found lodged in prison and the corporation blamed him for not informing the department about it six years ago.

Meeting: To discuss their demands, the Safai Karamchari Aayog held a meeting at the Disaster Management Centre here on Wednesday. Talking to the media, HR Rawat, secretary of the aayog, said the meeting was organised to make the proper structure of the aayog. Other then this, the Swatchta Samiti has been asked to submit money so that full pay could be given to employees.

President to visit Nainital: President of India Pratibha Patil will be in Nainital from June 5 to June 9. According to Uttarakhand Governor Margaret Alva, the President’s visit is personal. She said both of them would later be going to Dehradun for a passing out parade of the Indian Military Academy on June 10. Arrangements are being made by the administration for the President’s visit.

Foundation stones laid: Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank visited the Chaukhutiya area, Almora district, on Wednesday as a part of his Antyodaya Vikas Yatra. He said the aim of his government was to take development to the remotest areas in the state and asked officials to execute developmental programmes launched by the government within the specified time frame. He asked District Magistrate DS Garbyal to take stock of works being executed at regular intervals. He laid foundation stones and dedicated various schemes to the public.

Streetlights demanded: Residents of the Sitarganj area of Udham Singh Nagar are irked over the failure of the administration to provide them with streetlights over the past two months. In protest against it, traders of the town staged a demonstration at the office of the SDM on Tuesday. They said the people of the area were feeling unsafe due to the absence of streetlights in the area. It is learnt that the authorities have disconnected power supply to these streetlights due to the failure of the local civic body to pay dues to the department.

Two commit suicide: Two cases of suicide have come to light in the Ramnagar area of Nainital district. A woman of the Dhela area allegedly committed suicide after a tiff with her husband Navin Chandra. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Seema. In another incident, a man allegedly committed suicide in Chorpani village as he was under depression due to bad health. The deceased has been identified as 75-year-old Prem Ram.

One killed: A hotel guide working in Nainital was killed when he fell into a gorge. The deceased has been identified as 58-year-old Dewan Ram, a resident of the Birla checkpost area.

Logistic hubs again hit roadblock

The bidding process for developing two logistic hubs in Uttarakhand has again hit a roadblock with the State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (Sidcul) cancelling both the two bids it received in this regard.

“Since we received only two bids, we cancelled both of them. And now, we will reinitiate the entire bidding process for logistic hubs,” said a top government official.

With the development of key industrials estates of Haridwar and Pantnagar, Sidcul had chalked out plans to provide logistic support to the industries through these two proposed hubs. In 2009, about 10 technical bids were received by Sidcul for the purpose of logistic hubs.

Gandhian model for industries in the hills

Nine years after it was carved out, Uttarakhand is yet to make any considerable headway on the industrial development front in the hills, which in turn has failed to stop the widespread migration of youths towards the plains.

Though the industries department here claims that small industries entailing an investment of over Rs 100 crore would set shops in the hills this year, experts today asked the government to focus on the Gandhian model that promotes eco-friendly village and cottage industries in the mountainous areas, which they believe have vast potential of generating new sources of income.

At a seminar here, experts from Mumbai-based Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Forest Research Institute (FRI), industrial sector, NGOs and Chief Minister R P Nisank sat together to discuss the promotion of industrial development in the hills.

R Chidambram, Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the Prime Minister, called for utilising rural technologies for creating entrepreneur skills and employment opportunities in the hills. Giving a presentation, Chidambram said the central organisations like BARC and RUTAG have developed umpteen technologies which can be utilised for the development in the hills. He cited the examples of watermills which have now been upgraded to produce more electricity.

Nishank said his government was serious to promote industrialisation in the hills and called for promoting herbal-based industries. He said the government would now start offering special packaged “prasad” made of local-based resources at the Chardham temples comprising Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, which would generate more income for the tribal people of the area.

In his presentation, Pankaj Gupta, President of Indian Association of Uttarakhand (IAU) called for encouraging Gandhian model for industrial development in the hills. He said Mahatama Gandhi had advocated that village and cottage industries should be promoted which can now be replicated in the hills. He said the government should support the art of making souvenirs, handicrafts and other items on which small cottage industries in the sector can be set up.

Rakesh Oberai, Chairman CII Uttarakhand State Council called for promoting green industries in the hills and said the government should focus on organic farming. The agri produce of the state both processed and unprocessed should be marketed under a common brand, he said.
