Dobhal assumes charge: The Director-General of the Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology , Dr Rajendra Dobhal, has assumed charge as general secretary of the Uttarakhand Chapter of National Science Academy. Wildlife Institute of India scientist Dr JS Rawat relinquished the post on Monday. Rawat has been sent to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu, on deputation.

No clue to murder of driver: The police has failed to get any clue to the murder of a driver who was found dead near his house at Dak Pathar, Vikasnagar, on Monday. The police said it was working on different theories in the murder case of Sudama Prasad Dobhal.

Liquor shops closed on Aug 15: Dehradun District Magistrate Sachin Kurve on Tuesday asked all SDMs to ensure that all liquor shops and bars remain closed on Independence Day. He said if anyone found guilty, strict action would be taken.

One held for rape bid: A man has been arrested for allegedly trying to rape a minor at her Chandermani residence on Monday afternoon. According to the victim’s mother, her daughter was taking a bath when the youth, who lives in their neighbourhood, entered the bathroom. When he allegedly tried to rape her, she raised the alarm.He has been booked under Sections 376/511 of the IPC. — TNS

23 more polling stations for Almora: Twenty three more polling stations have been established in Almora district for the forthcoming Assembly poll. The increase has come about with the Election Commission approving the request of District Election Officer DS Garbyal following his consultations with public representatives. Earlier, Almora had 754 polling booths. Six polling booths have been established in the Dwarahat constituency, four in Salt, Jageshwar and Ranikhet each and five in Someshwar.

Address public grievances at earliest: DM: The Almora administration has made it clear that no laxity would be tolerated with regard to addressing complaints received during the Antyodaya Vikas Rath Yatra and Atal Chaupals being held by the state government. At a meeting held at Almora on Tuesday, District Magistrate DS Garbyal stated that nodal officers would be held responsible for not addressing the concerns of the people residing in Atal Adarsh Grams. He has ordered that complaints received must be evaluated at the earliest and the issues be addressed on a priority basis. He has stated that the progress would be evaluated by him every second day in the presence of the top brass of the administration.

Two youths booked in brawl case: An altercation among school students resulted in a bloody scuffle in Haldwani on Monday. According to reports, some students of St Paul School were allegedly assaulted with sticks and sharp-edged weapons on the nainital highway. Two of the injured students have been admitted to a hospital and the police has booked two youths in this regard. The fight is said to be an outcome of a scuffle in the school four days ago. The attackers came in a car and attacked a group of boys returning home after school.

Businessman commits suicide: A man who was into the business of quarrying allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a fan in the Peerumdara area of Ramnagar. According to reports, the deceased has been identified as Ashok Kumar Sharma. It is learnt that he had been depressed after his stone crusher mill had faced closure on account of certain new norms becoming effective.

Residents demand repair of roads: Residents of villages in the Kitcha area of Udham Singh Nagar have demanded an improvement in the pathetic condition of roads. A large number of residents from villages of Maharjpur, Darau and others called upon Ditrict Magistrate BVRC Purshottam on Monday and apprised him of the problems being faced by them on account of poor condition of roads. They said their life had become difficult on account of waterlogging and collection of muck on the roads which also led to outbreak of diseases. They also submitted a memorandum in support of their demands seeking an early redressal of problem in their respective villages.

Lokayukt calls on Alva: The Lokayukt, Justice MM Ghildiyal (retd), on Monday called on Governor Margaret Alva, who has recently resumed her duties after a month-long leave. He informed the Governor that the recommendations made by the Lokayukt pertaining to some complaints had not been implemented at any level.

Chain-snatching incident: Another chain-snatching incident was reported in the city from the Patelnagar area on Sunday. Rochipura residents, Purnima Jain and Sandeep Jain, had gone to Lal Pull Sabzi Mandi and were on their way back home on a scooter when they were targeted. A black Pulsar came from behind and the pillion rider snatched the chain of the woman, the police said. Before she could react, the miscreants fled. Sandeep chased after the bikers, but in vain. Later, the police was informed of the matter.

Meeting of childline panel: At a meeting of the Childline Adviser Committee, District Magistrate Sachin Kurve was asked to open homes for children facing adverse circumstances. The Coordinator of Parvartiya Bal Manch, Dwarika Prasad Noni, said the setting up of such homes would be of immense help to children in the age group of 10 years and above. He also asked the DM to issue identity cards to members of childline. He also asked the Health Department to provide free medical aid to children found by Childline 1098.

Sex racket busted at Haldwani, five held: The police has busted a sex racket at Haldwani and arrested five of its members, including the woman who had been running the same in the Kalavati Colony area for the past one year. They were arrested following a raid on a bungalow. The racket was allegedly being run by Meena Kaur. Further investigations are on.

High voltage: Fire in cable TV control room: A fire broke out in a cable television control room at Bhimtal on Sunday evening. The cause of the fire is said to be high voltage. Several electronic devices destroyed in the fire. According to reports, showing presence of mind, some persons on seeing the flames in the control room shut off the main switch. The sudden outbreak of fire also led to power disruption in the entire area. The incidents of electronic appliances being destroyed on account of voltage fluctuations have become common in the area. The people have been demanding a permanent solution to this problem.

VAT: Cloth merchants to observe closure on Aug 9: In protest against the state government’s decision to impose VAT on cloth, cloth merchants in the region have decided to observe closure on August 9. The closure call has been given by the Uttarakhand Kapda Vyapar Mahasangh. On Monday, cloth merchants from Ramnagar also gathered at the venue of a function being attended by Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank to air their resentment against the move. They also submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister.

Horse carts carrying illegally mined material impounded: The Haldwani administration has impounded seven horse carts that were being used for carrying illegally mined material from the Gaula river basin. The step is a part of a drive being carried out to check illegal quarrying in the basins of various rivers. The owners of the carts managed to flee. The carts were impounded at Indranagar and Rajpura gates of the Gaula mining area.

Student to be honoured for planting maximum saplings: The state government has decided to honour a Class VIII student from Dhaurara near Garud in Bageshwar district for planting the maximum number of trees. Thirteen-year-old Babloo would be given Rs 5,000 besides a roll of honour. It has also decided to give Rs 1 lakh each to three schools for taking afforestation. The schools to be rewarded are Public Inter College at Surhet in Pauri, Senior Primary School at Dhaurara and Government Inter-college at Khumera in Rudraprayag. These schools would be given the Tarushree Samman.

Joshi to head commission: Dr DP Joshi, a member of the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission (UPSC), will now head the commission. Principal Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh said according to the provision of powers vested with the Governor under Article 316 (1), Joshi had been appointed Chairman of the UPSC. His tenure will start from the day he assumes the office.

Technology Day today: The Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, will celebrate National Technology Day on May 11. A total of 500 schoolchildren have been invited to visit the Forest Research Institute’s City Centre campus that houses a photo gallery. Museums at the Kaulagarh office will also remain open for the visitors.

Father, son arrested: The police has arrested a father-son duo on the charge of gambling and seized more than Rs 20,000 from their possession. They have been identified as Nepal Singh and his son, Raju. Both have been booked under the Gangsters Act.

Meeting of sangathan: The Uttarakhand Sarv Samaj Sangathan has called a meeting on May 15 at Gita Bhawan to deliberate upon launching a campaign against the decision of the state government to make the knowledge of local dialects for the eligibility of government jobs compulsory. The meeting will be attended by office-bearers of various organisations, who are not native of hill areas.

Alva reviews works: State Governor Margaret Alva reviewed various works being done at Raj Bhawan here on Tuesday and ordered that works be done as per norms within the specified timeframe. Alva personally inspected the Golf Club, fencing work on the Raj Bhawan premises, rainwater harvesting, a swimming pool and restoration works at the main building. She also took stock of preparations for the forthcoming Raj Bhawan Golf Tournament that is slated to start on May 27.

Women carry patient in palanquin to road: Women of Tusreda village in Bageshwar carried a female patient in a palanquin to a road 6 km away from their village from where the patient was taken to a hospital in a vehicle. On Saturday night, when all men of the village had gone to attend a wedding, 22-year-old Kavita complained of stomachache. With no medical aid available in the village, the incident is a pointer to the plight of rural women.

Loan to farmers: District Magistrate, Nainital, Shailesh Bagauli has urged banking institutions to come forward for offering loans to farmers for developing poly houses. He said at least five villages should be developed as model villages for the purpose. At a meeting of the District Review and Coordination Committee here on Tuesday, Bagauli asked the District Horticulture Officer to prepare a project within a week in this regard.

One killed in mishap: One person was killed when the car he was travelling in overturned after colliding with a divider on the Nainital road. The deceased, Prakash Pathak, was returning after attending a wedding in Ranikhet. He was a resident of Shantipuri locality of Pantnagar.

Painting competition: The New Club, Nainital, will organise a painting competition for children of various schools on May 15. The competition would be organised on premises of the club and participants would be divided into two categories. Secretary of the club KB Melkani said students from various schools were expected to participate in the event.

Salary payment stopped: District Magistrate, Bageshwar, CS Napalchayal has ordered to stop the payment of salaries to employees of the mobile unit of the Horticulture Department as they were found absent from duty during a surprise check. Napalchayal has also recommended departmental action against the erring officials. He has also expressed his displeasure at the slow pace of work with regards to the construction of a new tehsil office, cabins and residential facilities in Kanda area of the district.
