Red alert issued in state: The police has issued a red alert in the state taking into account the serial blasts in Mumbai. According to office of the Uttarakhand Director General of Police, a red alert has been issued in the state following serial blasts in Mumbai. The police has been asked to be on alert and keep an eye on the movement of suspicious elements. The security at Dehradun Railway Station and other bus stations in several towns of Uttarakhand has also been beefed up.
Shaurya Diwas on July 23: Uttarakhand will observe Kargil Diwas falling on July 23 as Shaurya Diwas in all districts of the state. A foundation stone for State War Memorial will also be laid on the occasion. Issuing necessary directions, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar reiterated the state government’s commitment for the welfare of the ex-servicemen and their widows and asked the state officials to prepare a workplan for Shaurya Diwas observation. The Chief Secretary held that a hostel for the children of war widows would also be constructed at the earliest. He also pointed out that Sainik Rest Houses had been constructed in Roorkie and Thalisen areas of Uttarakhand.
Effigy of govt burnt: Family members of Uttarkashi porters, who are among the missing Kalindi peak trekkers on Wednesday burnt the effigy of the Uttarakhand government accusing it of delaying rescue operations. The protesters alleged that while a West Bengal team has reached Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand yet to send a rescue team to bring back the bodies.

Workshop on disaster management: A workshop on disaster management is being organised for officials of Champawat district from July 13 to July 15. Officials from the disaster management cell, Uttarakhand Administrative Institute, Nainital, will be providing training to officials of various departments in the district on disaster management. The training is being organised on the orders of District Magistrate Pankaj Kumar Pandey. Incidents of landslides, seismic activity, forest fires and cloud bursts are common in Champawat.
MLAs’ development fund: Various departments in Champawat district have utilised Rs 180.05 lakh out of the available Rs 632.80 lakh legislators’ development fund till now for the current financial year. This money has been utilised for executing 107 works in the Assembly constituencies of Champawat and Lohaghat. Providing this information, Chief Development Officer of the district TS Brijwal has stated that the said money has been given to executing agencies for carrying out 40 works in Champawat and 67 works in the Lohaghat Assembly segments. The works mainly pertain to the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, Jan Milan Kendras etc.
Two drowned in canals: Two persons, an old woman and a youth, drowned in canals in Haldwani and Ramnagar. According to information, the body of 75-year-old Anandi Devi was found from an irrigation canal flowing through the Katghariya area of Haldwani. She was a resident of Kumaon Colony in the Jawahar Jyoti area of the town. She had gone out for morning walk on Tuesday, but did not return. It was later in the day that the police was informed of a body having surfaced in the canal. It is being assumed that the woman had slipped and drowned. In another incident, the body of 18-year-old Puran Dwivedi was found from Dhela barrage on Tuesday evening. He had been missing since July 9. It was only after the main barrage on the Kosi was closed and a search initiated that the body was found.
Youth’s body found: A body of a youth was found on the railway line near Lal Kuan. The body bore injuries. The deceased is yet to be identified. It is being assumed that the boy might have fallen from a moving train and killed.
Woman electrocuted: An old woman was electrocuted in Jagatpura locality of Rudrapur. The deceased has been identified as Pushpa Devi (65). It is learnt that she was drying clothes on the roof of her neighbour’s house when she got entangled in a high-tension power line and was electrocuted. The agitated residents have demanded a compensation for her family and the removal of the power line from the residential area.
