Five members of a family, including four children, were buried alive and two others injured in a house collapse as heavy rains lashed many parts of Uttarakhand throwing life out of gear. The incident of house collapse took place early on Saturday when the family was asleep at Ibrahimpur village.
While Ashish (15), Shubham (11), Shashi (10), Kamal (3) and their mother Sanyogita (35) were killed on the spot, their father Kaliram (42) and sister Anjali (12) were seriously injured in the incident, officials of Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre said in Dehra Dun on Saturday.
The injured have been referred to Doon Hospital.
Meanwhile, most parts of the hill state received heavy rains with Sitarganj getting a maximum of 193 mm of rainfall in the state followed by Haldwani 160 mm, Pantnagar 116.2 mm, Nainital 108 mm, Tehri 107.8 mm, Mukteshwar 102 mm, Roorkee 97 mm and Almora 89 mm since yesterday, the Met office said.
Met Director Anand Sharma said more rains are expected to lash the hill state in the next 36 hours with the department issuing a warning for heavy rains at some places that might also trigger landslides.
The widespread rains have also broken the 39-year-old record for Dehra Dun which has so far received 2810 mm of rainfall since June 1 this year, he said.
In 1971, Dehra Dun had recorded 2763 mm of rains.
The incessant rains since yesterday have also disrupted the annual Chardham pilgrimage with national highways and roads linking them being hit by landslides at a number of places.
