Snow leaves 200 tourists stranded in Uttarakhand

DEHRADUN: Over 200 people, including tourists, are stranded on national highways and border roads due to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand. Around 150 villages are cut-off from the rest of the world.

More than 10 taxis and other vehicles carrying about 100 people from Rishikesh to Gangotri, Dehradun to Yamnotri and Doon Ki Valley, Rudrapryag to Ukhimath are stranded at different places. For the last four days, tourists are also stranded on a 31 km stretch on Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway in Uttarkashi and on the 300 km Dharchula-Kailash Mansoravar Yatra Road.

According to reports, Pithoragarh-Thal-Munsyari road is also blocked due to heavy snowfall since Saturday. This road leads to Harshil in Uttarkashi where units of the Army and paramilitary forces, including ITBP and SSB, are stationed. Supply of daily ration, including milk and vegetables, to these units has been affected.

Jawans of Border Road Organization (BRO) and ITBP are working to clear snow-covered roads and rescue villagers. If border roads are not cleared soon, Uttarakhand government will seeks the help of Army and other paramilitary forces to air drop food to the villages, said sources.
