DEHRADUN: Three policemen were arrested for allegedly torturing a 25-year-old taxi owner to death and throwing his body into the Saryu river. The policemen sub-inspector Chandra Prasad Lodhi and constables Naveen Joshi and Mahesh Dangwal have been sent to Almora jail.
Post-mortem examination confirmed that Ritesh Poona alias Rocky, the taxi owner, was hit by hard objects on his head and other vital parts. Police sources said Ritesh died while being interrogated in the Bageshwar's Kotwali police station.
The three policemen had picked up Ritesh on Saturday on a complaint by a local resident Amar Singh for teasing his wife during the Uttarayanai fair in Bageshwar on January 14.
Police sources gave 9.30 pm Saturday as the approximate time when Ritesh's body was thrown into the Saryu. It could be fished out by a team of police swimmers at 7.30 pm on Sunday after a long search.
Bageshwar SP Mukhtar Mohsin said the three cops were booked under Section 302 (murder) of IPC on the basis of an FIR lodged by Ritesh's father Nandan Singh on Sunday.
They were arrested by a team of Special Operation Group ( SOG) of Uttarakhand police from near a police post in Bageshwar and sent to Almora jail after chief judicial magistrate (Bageshwar) Monica Mittal remanded them in 14 days' judicial custody on Monday.
As residents came to know about the custody death, they gheraoed Kotwali police station and offices of senior police officers in Bageshwar.
