Cops arrest 2 in Haldwani, deny any link with Mumbai

NEW DELHI: A special cell team led by Subhash Vats on Wednesday arrested two men in Haldwani who are responsible for over 30 robberies and murders in Delhi and Uttaranchal. DCP (special cell) Arun Kampani has, however, denied that the accused have any links with the Pandey gang that is active in Haldwani considered close to the Mumbai underworld. There was speculation that this was somehow linked to the J Dey murder in which the Mumbai police had claimed that the gang had got the weapon from Haldwani and had been given money in Chandni Chowk in Delhi.

The accused have been identified as Irfan, 38, and Bhagwati, 32. Irfan, alias Don, is a noted history-sheeter from Bijnore, UP, who committed a slew of crimes across Uttaranchal, UP and the capital's suburbs. With the arrest of these criminals several incidents of theft in the area of PS Khajoori and Samaipur Badli have been solved.

"Irfan entered in the world of crime in 1992. A resident of Sadruddin Nagar in Bijnore, Irfan murdered an associate named Babu in 1994 because of a dispute over money and leadership. Babu had demanded a larger share of the booty but Irfan killed him and declared himself the gang leader. After the police in Nahtore began putting pressure on him he fled to Rudrapur Distt in Haldwani, Uttaranchal, in 2000 and started committing crimes there as well. In 2004 he shifted base to Delhi.

In the year 2006 Irfan, along with other associates, committed a robbery in the area of PS Gokalpuri in Delhi in which Rs 3 lakhs worth of jewellery and cash was robbed from the house of one Wakil. While his associates namely Muddassir, Salim and Ashraf alias Deny were arrested in this robbery but he remained at large. This robbery case has resulted in conviction. Mudassir has been convicted for 7 yrs imprisonment whereas Salim and Deny have also been convicted in this case. Irfan alias Don was declared as proclaimed offender.
