Heavy rains take a break till July 3

LUCKNOW: The state got a break from five days of continuous heavy rains on Friday. Though light to moderate intermittent rains were reported from many parts of the state, the intensity decreased. However, rain-related incidents claimed six more lives in the state, taking the toll to 21, so far this monsoon. The weatherman said that similar weather conditions would prevail for the next 2-3 days and rains would intensify again from July 3-4.

The city recorded 227.6mm rains from Thursday evening till Friday evening. After overnight rains, Friday morning was calm but cloudy. The maximum temperature during the day reached 34 degrees Celsius, which was three degrees below normal. However, when compared to Thursday, the day temperature was up by eight degrees. While the weather remained dry for better part of the day, a heavy spell lashed the city in the evening.

State Met director, J P Gupta said that the low pressure area over east UP has weakened. The low pressure was responsible for creation of a cyclonic circulation which caused incessant rains for the last five days. "While there will be rains, the intensity would be lesser. However, downpour may occur at isolated places. Besides, another cyclonic circulation is expected to form over east UP by July 3-4, which will intensify rains,'' Gupta said.

According to reports reaching state police headquarters, three persons of a family, including a child, died in Kanpur when their house collapsed. The house was in dilapidated condition and had been declared unsafe by the district civic authorities. On the other hand, in Fatehpur district, three persons, including a minor girl, were killed after being struck by lightning. A person was also injured in the incident and has been admitted in the hospital.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rains and cloudy weather was also reported from other parts of the state. Bareilly recorded 198mm rains, which was also the highest in the state. While Kanpur received 90 mm rains, Balrampur recorded 100 mm, Fatehpur received 70 mm, Bahraich 50.4 mm, Ballia 30 mm, Meerut 30 mm, Jalaun and Mahoba 10 mm each. Allahabad recorded 5.7 mm rains, Agra 25.2 mm, Varanasi 0.6 mm and Gorakhpur 11.1 mm.

Major rivers in the state were on the rise due to heavy rains in Uttarakhand and Nepal. While the Ganga was rising in Varanasi, Kanpur and Rae Bareli, the Sharda was in spate in Kheri and Saryu in Ayodhya. The Ghagra was on the rise in Barabanki, Bahraich and Gonda. The water level of the Khadda river was rising in Kushinagar. The UP relief commissioner's office has directed all districts magistrates to prepare in advance to tackle floods.
