Dehradun, Jul 18 (PTI) A large number of pilgrims from across the country today thronged Haridwar on the auspicious occasion of the first monday of 'Sawan', a month considered to be sacred by Hindus who dedicate it to Lord Shiva. Nearly five lakh pilgrims took waters from the holy Ganga river to offer it to Lord Shiva, officials said. SP Kiran Lal Shah said elaborate security arrangements have been made keeping in view the arrival of large number of pilgrims. "We are maintaining round-the-clock vigil in all key areas like Har Ki Paudi, Chandi Ghat and Premnagar Ghat.Around 80 lakh pilgrims are expected to visit Haridwar during the month of 'Sawan'," he said. The SP said the entire region has been divided into four 'super zones', 18 zones and 75 sectors for effective monitoring.
