Pre-recruitment training: On the direction of the District Ex-servicemen Welfare and Rehabilitation Officer, the dependants of the ex-servicemen of the Garhwal region would be given 56-day pre-recruitment training to prepare them for the Army, Air Force and Police recruitment rallies from August 16. The training would be given free of cost. The candidates applying for it should be in the age group of 17 and a half years to 21 years and should have secured 45 per cent marks in the matriculation examination. An aspirant must bring with him a medical certificate, copy of discharge book of his father, part two orders of the records and an indemnity bond. The selection for the training will be held in Dehradun district from August 8 to 12.
Bridge collapses: Owing to the heavy rain that lashed the region last night, a bridge collapsed at Chamasari Majra, Luharigarh, near here on Tuesday. After getting the information about the bridge collapse, the personnel of the Disaster Management Department are removing the debris from the spot. No casualty has been reported.
EC team: Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi, along with Election Commissioners VS Sampath and HS Brahma, is arriving here on Wednesday to review the preparations for the Uttarakhand assembly elections due early next year. During its visit, the EC team would discuss the readiness of the state for the elections, said Uttarakhand Chief Election Officer Radha Raturi.
Nainital areas go without power: A large number of areas of Nainital town went without power for a major part of the day on Tuesday. The power supply coming from Kaladhungi was disrupted at 1.30 am on account of a tree falling over the power supply cable. The functioning in several offices and commercials establishments was also hit. The power supply was yet to be resumed when the report was last filed.
Ex-Prez to visit Kumaon varsity: Nainital is gearing up to welcome the former President, APJ Abdul Kalam. He is likely to visit the town to participate in the convocation of Kumaon University on August 10. Sources said Kalam had expressed desire to interact with children from local government schools on the day prior to the convocation. This has caused a considerable unrest among the employees of the Education Department.
Protest marks Kisan Bachao Divas: Farmers owing allegiance to the Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha staged a protest in Lalkuan to mark Kisan Bachao Divas while protesting against attempts by various forces to grab agricultural lands. The speakers lashed out at the Uttarakhand and Central Governments on a policy pertaining to disaster management and rehabilitation. They said the government was resorting to anti-farmer policies and trying to dissuade farmers from carrying out their traditional vocation of agriculture and animal rearing. They announced that the struggle to get the status of a revenue village for Bindukhatta would continue till their goal was achieved.
Demand for replacement of burnt transformer: Residents of the Kanchanpur and Chhoi areas of Ramnagar are agitated over the failure of the Power Department to replace a burnt transformer for over one and a half months. They said the transformer had been burnt in June. They said though officials of the Power Corporation had made a temporary arrangement and power supply was given to them, despite assurances no attempt had been made to replace the burnt transformer.
