Kumaon’s green bounty falling fast to greed

More Uttarakhand News, about Uttarakahnd and more http://uttarakhandnews2k.blogspot.com/

Illegal felling of trees seems to be continuing unabated in the Kumaon region. In a fresh development, five valuable live trees, including three Sheesam and two Jamun trees have reportedly been cut down in the Jafarpur-Dineshpur region of US Nagar.

Unfortunately, whenever such anti-environment activities have come to light, the concerned departments have only tried to pass the buck to others, resulting in no proper action against the culprits.

These valuable live trees have been found cut in irrigation department’s area. An FIR has also been registered by the irrigation department against the suspects in this case of illegal tree felling, said KS Roopwal, Jafarpur forest ranger, while talking to The Pioneer.

Since the matter of illegal felling of live trees has taken place in the irrigation department area, so we need to register a separate case against the suspects, he further said.

The trees have been found cut on the bank of the canal in Jafarpur-Dineshpur area as the concerned forest guard had informed. And as a case has already been registered by the local irrigation department against the unidentified persons, so the forest department can’t say much on this issue, Roopwal added.

Similarly, it is worth mention here that whether it is illicit felling of Devdar trees in Almora’s Jageshwar area or the matter of illegal cutting of large number of pine trees in Nainital forest division as had been reported in some sections of the media or elsewhere, no credible action seem to have taken against the suspects in any case so far.

Surprisingly, in Nainital’s incident involving illegal felling of pine trees, the investigating agency led by the CCF Kumaon in its report brushed aside all such allegations, maintaining that there is no illegal felling of live trees, except for some procedural mistakes on part of the concerned divisional forest officer.

Similarly, though now the regular police is investigating the illegal felling of trees in Jageshwar (Almora), there has no credible action against the suspects.

So far as many as 43 cases of illegal felling of Devdar trees have been come to light as confirmed by local SDM NS Dangi the enforcement agencies have also recovered timber in huge quantity from different places in Almora so far. But there has no credible action against suspects except arrest of a trade and suspension of a couple of forest guards.
