SC asks Uttarakhand Government to take decision on water level in Tehri dam

22.9.2011 (UNI) The Supreme Court today told the state of Uttarakhand to take an appropriate decision regarding the water level to be maintained in Tehri dam reservoir before the next date of hearing.

Earlier Sanjay Parikh, counsel for the petitioner told the apex court bench consisting of Justices R V Raveendran, H L Gokhale and A K Patnaik that the state of Uttarakhand has failed to implement the relief and rehabilitation programme to rehabilitate the oustees of Tehri dam project in Uttarakhand.

The Judges directed that the final hearing of the case shall start in the month of November.

According to the petitioner N Dayal, 27 villages have been submerged. The villagers have been uprooted due to Tehri dam project but no alternative land has been allotted till date to the uprooted villagers.

The three judges bench, headed by Justice R V Raveendran, however, made it clear that the courts are meant for protecting the fundamental rights of the citizens of the country, including right to life, and Tehri dam project is meant for generation of power for the state of Uttarakhand. UNI
