More Uttarakhand News, about Uttarakahnd and more http://uttarakhandnews2k.blogspot.com/

Dehra Dun, Sep 26 (PTI) The day-long Tehri bandh today called by Congress MLA Kishore Upadhyay to protest the Uttarakhand government's alleged failure to fulfil demands related to his constituency evoked a mixed response. Most of the educational and commercial institutes and markets were closed, though government offices remained open and normal traffic was seen on the roads. Police said the bandh passed off peacefully and there was no report of any untoward incident. The protesters burnt effigies of the state government at various places, including Dehra Dun, Rishikesh and Haridwar. Upadhyay is demanding a new forestry or agriculture university at Ranichauri area and promotion of tourism in and around the Tehri dam reservoir among others things. Social activists, including Chipko movement leader Sunderlal Bahuguna, are supporting his cause.
