Exempt 1% VAT on clothes, CM urged: A delegation of local cloth merchants met Chief Minister BC Khanduri to urge him to exempt 1 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on clothes. He assured them that he would look into the matter positively. President of the Dehradun Cloth Merchants Association Anil Goyal urged the CM to exempt 1 per cent tax on VAT on the lines of the other state in the country. Khanduri said he would verify the matter and would try to fulfil their demands. Those who were included in the delegation were Umesh Aggarwal, Vipin Nagliya and Amardeep Anand.

Two arrested: The Kotwali police on Saturday arrested two mechanics who were allegedly trying to commit a theft at an ATM in Race Course on the night of September 15. Ravi and Pravender have been arrested on the basis of a CCTV footage. The duo was making attempts to steal money from the ATM. But they did not succeed. However, as a CCTV camera is installed at the ATM, they were arrested.

Abduction case: The Raipur police has arrested a native of Bihar for the alleged abduction of a four-year-old boy from the Raipur area. The police said Sudhanshu was allegedly abducted by Mahender Singh Yadav on Sunday afternoon from near his house. However, onlookers informed the matter to the police, which managed to arrest the accused in the evening. The police is questioning the accused.

Desecration: Normalcy returns to region: An uneasy calm prevails in the region following a large-scale unrest on the issue of the desecration of the “Bir” at a gurdwara in Kataiyya village of Pilibhit district (UP). The bus service is slowly becoming normal after the region, particularly parts of Terai, had witnessed arson and unrest over the past few days. Tanakpur Bus Transport Depot has suffered the maximum loss during these days as more than 12 of its buses were damaged by irate mobs. After having stopped the bus service for a couple of days, the depot has once again started plying buses from Saturday. Meanwhile, the desecrated “Bir” is learnt to have been sent to Amritsar amid tight security. The Pilibhit police is yet to make any arrest in the matter which is being probed by a special task force.

Protests over ‘torture’ of labourer in Lal Kuan: Protests have erupted in Lal Kuan on the issue of the alleged beating up and torture of a labourer by two shopkeepers. An agitated mob also burnt an effigy of the police accusing it of inaction. The protests were led by members of the Uttarakhand Berozegar Sangathan. According to reports, two shopkeepers, Bunty and Shunty, have been accused of torturing and beating up Ram Babu. The labourer has been accused of misappropriating Rs 3,000. He was allegedly beaten up with rods and pipes till he become unconscious. The police has given an assurance to book the accused and initiate legal proceedings against them.

48 taxi drivers challaned in Haldwani: The Haldwani police has launched a drive against taxi drivers for not having a partition between their own seat and the front seat passenger and for having installed a music system. It is learnt that 48 drivers were issued challans on the first day of the drive for violating the norms. Orders pertaining to the partition and music systems were issued more than two years ago to prevent accidents.

Immolation bid by woman in US Nagar: A woman resident of the Gularbhoj area, Udham Singh Nagar, allegedly tried to immolate herself after being sexually assaulted by two youths. According to reports, the victim had gone to the forest to fetch fuel wood when she was allegedly sexually assaulted by two youths. On reaching home, she set herself afire. She is under treatment at a Haldwani hospital. Investigations are on.

Surprise checks in hospitals, clinics in Tanakpur: A series of surprise checks in hospitals and clinics in Tanakpur by administrative officials have revealed large-scale irregularities. It is learnt that raids conducted on Saturday led to the discovery of a clinic being run by proxy in the name of some other doctors. It was also found that allopathic medicines were being given to patients at an ayurvedic hospital. At one place, ultrasound was being conducted without proper permission. A report is being sent to senior officials of the departments concerned for further action against the guilty.
