Uttarakhand governor approves Lokayukta Bill

DEHRADUN: Two days after Uttarakhand Assembly unanimously passed much-publicised Lokayukta Bill with CM under its purview, Uttarakhand Governor Margaret Alva on Thursday night put a seal of approval on it.

The legislation on the lines of the Jan Lokpal Bill will also cover ministers government servants including IAS and IPS officers, besides, lower judiciary. The bill provides for minimum punishment of six months and maximum life imprisonment. It will also have former CMs, ministers and retired officers under its purview but leaves Uttarakhand HC judges out of it.

Governor Alva also signed another Affiliating Uttarakhand University amendment Bill with Lokayukta Bill.

After the Governor approval of Uttarakhand Lokayukta Bill which was tabled in the House on October 31 by CM B.C.Khanduri to pave a way for its passage from Assembly on Tuesday(Nov. 1), anti-graft legislation will now be sent to President Pratibha Patil through UPA Government for her approval before it becomes an Uttarakhand Lokayukta Act -2011.

Signing both Bills in presence of Chief Minister retired Major-General Khanduri at Governor House in state capital at 8 PM, Governor Margaret Alva appreciating Khanduri for fulfilling his promise of bringing a good and corruption-free governance in state in less than two months after he took over as CM on September 11.

She also eulogized CM Khanduri for making his best efforts to change the overall system and functioning in government through recent reform measures initiated by him during the period.

Governor also appreciated CM for enacting three other significant laws- Public Servant Rights, Government Servants Annual Transfer Policy and Setting up of Special courts laws- by getting these Bills passed by state Assembly during 3-day Monsoon Session which concluded in last week of September. She hoped that these laws will not only help curb corruption but also redress the genuine grievances of people.
