Thieves break into MLA’s house: Four thieves tried to break a locker at BJP MLA Rajkumar’s residence at Sahaspur in the middle of the night on Friday but ran away empty-handed. The MLA, who returned home from Uttarkashi in the morning, said the thieves had entered into his house from an under-construction portion of the house. They threatened his wife with a knife and asked her for money and jewellery. She told them that the family did not keep cash or jewellery in the house. The thieves searched for the locker and tried to open it but sensing someone approaching the house, they ran away. Surya Bhushan Negi, SHO, Sahaspur Police Station, said the MLA did not lodge any complaint of theft.
Interrogated: Teams of the CBI interrogated Sanjay Bhatt and Pooja Bahukhandi, both followers of late Swami Nityanand, regarding his death a few months ago. Swami Nityanand had died following an indefinite fast against illegal quarrying on the Ganga riverbed. Sources said the duo named some police officials and five others for playing foul in this matter.
Graft case: The locker of Drug Controller, Dharam Singh, who was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 by a Vigilance team on Wednesday, could not be opened as his wife who lives in Delhi did not reach the town. Superintendent of Police, Vigilance, BK Juyal said the money deposited by Dharam Singh in various banks could run in several crores, as was indicated by the seizure of many passbooks from his house.

Banks told to give easy loans to farmers: Champawat District Magistrate Ashish Joshi has called upon banks to provide loans to the masses at low rates of interest so that there can be a qualitative change in their standard of living. At a meeting held at Champawat on Friday, Joshi also urged to increase the credit deposit ratio in the district to 30 per cent. He has asked the officials of various banks operating in the district to extend easy loans to farmers, horticulturists and small entrepreneurs. He has also sought the help of banking institutions to provide kisan credit cards to the maximum number of farmers so that they can avail the benefits of various schemes launched by the government.
Ban on quarrying in Champawat lifted: The ban imposed by the district administration in Champawat on quarrying has been lifted. An order in this regard has been issued by District Magistrate Ashish Joshi. The ban had been imposed in June owing to large scale losses on account of a rain-related disaster in the region during the monsoon. Lifting the ban, Joshi has underlined that it needs to be kept in mind that quarrying activities will take place according to the norms.
National conference at Kumaon varsity: A two-day national conference on “Emerging trends in chemistry-biology interface” was organised by the chemistry department of Kumaon University at Nainital. The conference was held to mark the celebrations of the international year of chemistry. Deliberating on a range of issues related to the topic, experts called for a sustained research on the rich flora present in this part of the country. They also called for the optimum utilisation of research opportunities being offered at the government level.

Man, son killed in mishap: Two persons were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned on the Rampur road in Rudrapur. Gopal of the Beesalpur area, Pilibhit, had hired a four-wheeler along with his son, Sunil, to transport bamboo leaves to Delhi. The vehicle overturned near Shaheed Bhagat Singh College on the Rampur road, killing the duo. The driver and the cleaner of the vehicle fled the spot after the accident.
