New Delhi, Nov 4 (PTI) The foundation stone of the ambitious 125 km Rishikesh-Karan Prayag rail link project in Uttarakhand, which will reduce the travel time between the two places by half, will be laid by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on November 9. "The UPA chairperson will lay the foundation stone at Gauchar close to Rishikesh on November 9," said a Northern Railway official, adding the project cost is pegged at Rs 4,295.30 crore. The distance of 176 km from Rishikesh to Karan Prayag is covered in seven to eight hours but once the project is commissioned, it would be reduced to 125 km and would be covered in about 4 hours, the official said. Important towns falling on the proposed alignment are Muni-Ki-Reti, Shivpuri, Dev Prayag, Kirti Nagar, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Gauchar and Karan Prayag. Important religious and tourist places flocked by tourists and pilgrims would become easy to access once the project is commissioned, thus giving a boost to the entire region, the official said. Uttarakhand goes to assembly poll next year.
