Suicide at restaurant: Shakar Rai, worker at Sinedine Restaurant in the town, committed suicide by taking poison on Tuesday night in a restaurant room. Rai, 23, hailed from Calcutta and was working in the restaurant for the last six years. The hotel owner refused having any altercation with the deceased, or knowing any other reason which could have led him to take this extreme step. It was late in the afternoon on Tuesday that Rai slept and asked others not to disturb him as he did not feel well. When his health started deteriorating at night, he was taken to Doon hospital, where he died after some time.

Student dies in accident: Mehr Deep Singh Sohal, 17, student of class X, died after he got crushed under a speeding truck near ISBT at 7 in the morning. Sohal, resident of Surderwala at Raipur, was driving a motor cycle and was going to his school. The police has arrested the truck driver.

Encroachments removed: Kotwali police along with city traffic police removed some 55 encroachments from Tehsil Chowk to Prince Chowk. The rheri pullers and kiosk owners were also removed. The shopkeepers who had displayed their paraphernalia outside their shops were given a warning to mend their ways. The drive started in the afternoon ran for two hours.

Theft in shop: The shutters of Muskurahat Selection, a shop owned by Manav Sharma, resident of Gujrada on Sahastradhara, was found cut when he came in the morning to open his shop. Cash worth Rs 12,000, six mobiles, several pen drives, memory cards, 30 tubelights and other small articles were found stolen. The thieves have not been caught as yet.

Follow norms for using forestlands: DM: District Magistrate at Nainital Nidhi Mani Tripathi has ordered that the latest norms should be kept in mind while making proposals pertaining to the transfer of forest land for executing various development projects. She gave these orders to her subordinates at a meeting held at Nainital on Wednesday. She has also ordered that before making such proposals the officials of the department making the proposal and the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) inspect the site jointly so that there are no issues left pending. She also pointed out that the structures, including schools, destroyed in disaster can also be built exclusively on non-forest government land.

Marriage solemnised at hospital: In a freak instance, a bridegroom landed at a hospital along with the marriage party and a priest for solemnising his marriage with the girl who had been admitted there following an accident just on the day of her marriage. The incident is reported to have taken place in Khatima in Udham Singh Nagar. It is learnt that when Dushyant Singh of the Tilak Nagar locality, who works in a bank in Punjab, came to know that his would-be wife had been admitted to a local hospital with a fracture resulting from a fall, he decided to go ahead with the marriage ceremony while postponing the celebrations. After seeking the permission from the hospital authorities, he went there with a group of near and dear ones to get the marriage with puja solemnised.

Woman, son killed in mishap: A woman and son were killed when the motorcycle they were ridling on rammed into a tractor trolley in the Sitarganj area of Udham Singh Nagar. The deceased have been identified as 47-year-old Kulvinder Kaur and 25-year-old Jagpal Singh of the Pratapur locality of Khatima. They were returning from a marriage party of Kulvinder’s grandson when their motorcycle hit a tractor trolley that had been parked on a roadside at Vidhaura Majhaula village. They were rushed to a hospital where they were declared dead.

Two youths die in collision: Two youths were killed when their motorcycle collided with a mini bus in Rudrapur. It is learnt that Mubarak Ali of Hamirabad in the Bilaspur area of Rampur and Mehboob of Ganinagar in Moradabad were returning after having sold peas at a wholesale market when their motorcycle had a head-on collision with a mini bus coming from Kashipur near Jafarpur village. The driver of the bus is learnt to have fled from the spot after the incident. The two victims had sustained major head injuries in the accident. Police investigations are on in the matter.

Protest against water shortage: Residents of Chupdakhet village near Ranikhet are agitated over the failure of the administration to restore proper water supply to them for almost three months. A statehood agitator Jodh Singh Bora staged a one-day sit-in protest at Didihat in support of the demand of the people. Villagers say that the water supply has been hit on account of work done on a road under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana. They have demanded that immediate steps should be taken to restore water supply to them.
