Thirty six gram panchayats of Uttarakhand received the Nirmal Gram Award for 2010-11 in Dehradun on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, in the function organised in the Forest Research Institute, Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi said that ensuring potable water supply and maintaining sanitation are problems being faced across the nation.
Congratulating the pradhans of gram panchayats, the Governor expressed happiness at the fact that the number of gram panchayats receiving this award is increasing consistently. “This shows that the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan is achieving greater success than in past years. Improved sanitation facilities and infrastructural development are important indicators of development in any country,” said Qureshi, adding that this programme emphasises more on raising awareness and community participation.
Speaking as the special guest on the occasion, the chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said that Uttarakhand has achieved the sixth position among Indian States in the implementation of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan. He stressed on the need for the State to attempt achieving the first position in this campaign. Stating that empowering and strengthening the panchayats is essential for achieving development in the State, he said that the success of the campaign also depends on panchayats and public cooperation.
Swajal project director Kapil Lal said that the Sampoorna Swachata Abhiyan was started in Uttarakhand in 2003-04 when the level of sanitation in the rural area of the State was 21 per cent which has now increased to 96.53 per cent. More than 7.50 lakh private toilets, 2,928 school toilets and 349 aanganwari toilets have been constructed as part of this campaign so far.
