Dehradun, Dec 11:
Uttarakhand government today fixed the state advised price for sugarcane at Rs 285 (normal variety) and Rs 295 (high quality variety) per quintal for the current crushing season.
Making the announcement in the State Assembly, sugarcane development minister S S Negi said the prices had been fixed keeping in mind the interest of the farmers as per recommendations of a state government appointed panel.
Sugarcane growers can now sell their produce of the normal variety for Rs 285 per quintal to sugar mills, Negi said adding the high quality sugarcane will be available to sugar factories at a cost of Rs 295 per quintal.
Claiming credit for the move, he said sugarcane prices fixed by Uttarakhand government were more than its current prices in Punjab and Haryana where they have been fixed at Rs 250 and Rs 240 per quintal.
After the prices were announced for the 2012-2013 crushing season in the House, opposition BJP members demanded a hike of at least Rs 5 per quintal in the prices but the demand was turned down by the Minister concerned who said raising it further would put mill owners in trouble.
“We have to take care of the interest of both farmers and mill owners who are interdependent,” he said.
