While noted Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar celebrated his 90th birthday on Tuesday, not many in Uttarakhand would know that one of the hit films he starred in was shot in Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The actor spent time in Ghodakhal and Bhowali in Nainital while shooting for the 1958 movie Madhumati which was the record holder for the most Filmfare Awards for 37 years with nine awards.
According to Doon Library and Research Centre research staff Manoj Panjani, the hit songs of this movie directed by Bimal Roy like suhana safar aur ye mausam hasin were also shot in Nainital district. Kumar stayed at Ghodakhal and Bhowali in this district. “There is a scene shot here in which the male lead is climbing a hill to reach a temple while the female lead played by Vaijayantimala is climbing the hill at a faster pace than him. Though this scene was shot here, the scene in the temple was filmed in a studio but the continuity of expression was maintained by Kumar. Talking to me once, Kumar told me that those raised in Hindi speaking regions have a natural flow while speaking and I felt that in the early years the strain resulting from the lack of this flow used to show on my face while acting,” said Panjani.
