Home page of Uttarakhand govt’s website hacked

The Information and Public Relations Department of the Uttarakhand government’s official website was hacked and subsequently shut down.

While the hackers posted objectionable messages on the website, the Information department said no information was accessed as only the home page was hacked.

On Friday, K C Chauhan, the assistant director (Information), lodged an FIR with the Dehradun police against unknown hackers and Superintendent of Police (Dehradun) Navneet Singh told The Indian Express over the phone that they were investigating the case.

“We have sought help from the cyber experts, besides the state’s Special Task Force (STF) to confirm the identity of hackers,” he said, adding that the police was in touch with the private company that developed the site in the past to ensure technical support in the case.

Chauhan, the complainant, said only the home page of the website — http://www.uttarainformation.gov.in — was hacked and that “all contents of the inside pages are safe”.

He said one of the messages which hackers posted on the website read “we are slipping but not dead” and that some of the content was posted in Urdu.

Another message, he said, read: “Free Kashmir and free Syria”.

Although the website does not have much sensitive information, the government was on alert.

“Dehradun has several institutes of national repute… a decision to lodge the FIR was taken at top level,” a state government source said.
