A team of young volunteers from Japan joined the charity mission of Mata Amritanandamayi Math (MAM) in rehabilitating villagers in the flood-hit Uttarakhand.
The Math had adopted 42 villages in Uttarakhand of which 38 are in Rudraprayag district and four in Uttarkashi district. The Math is building modest quake-resistant two-room houses in the villages. wA total of 73 students, including 43 women, from Japan, worked for five days in erecting a row of houses for 60 families in rugged Batwari Sonar village.
They shoved out soil and large stones from the banks of the Mandakini river and passed it on to the upper reaches 350 metres from the river. Most of them were in the age group of 18-23.
MAM spokesperson said that Batwari Sonar villagers were “fascinated” to see the Japanese youngsters working in a terrain unfamiliar to them. “They ate simple food - rice and dal,” he said.
The Japanese also cleaned up the village by removing garbage and filth.
The MAM is progressing with its Rs 50-crore relief-and-rehabilitation programme to help victims of June-2013 Kedarnath flood havoc.
