DEHRADUN: Just hours after the model code of conduct came into force, the Uttarakhand cabinet on Wednesday announced a series of sops, including waiving off surcharge of Rs 4.26 crore leveled against entrepreneurs on their pending electricity dues.
The state government will give the amount, owed by around 2,379 owners of medium and small-scale industrial units, to Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) in the form of subsidies.
A senior IAS officer, who attended the cabinet meeting, said the government's decision to exempt the surcharge will help boost industrialization in the Himalayan state.
Commenting on the decision, a political observer said, "The decision is a part of a slew of sops taken by the government to woo those involved in the business and others, with an eye on Lok Sabha polls scheduled to be held on May 7 in all five seats, but as it was done for the first time, it will help boost industrialization in the state."
To bolster horticulture and floriculture in the state, the cabinet also decided to set up Uttarakhand Horticulture and Floriculture Company, which will work under the supervision of state-owned
Floriculture Research Development Corporation to ensure the growth of best quality vegetables and fruits, the IAS officer said.
The cabinet gave a green signal to the decision to give laptops to Class XII students of Uttarakhand Intermediate Board who secure at least 80% or more marks in annual examinations. Students of technical and medical colleges will also be given laptops on securing at least 70% or more marks in the examinations.
The decisions seem to have been taken to woo voters of 18 years and above, who constitute a sizable chunk of the population in all 5 Lok Sabha constituencies, ahead of the general elections.
