Japanese team in Nainital to revive lakes

NAINITAL: A group of five scientists, experts and technicians from Japan, is on a visit to the lake city to explore the use of new techniques to improve the condition of several lakes in the region, including the famous Naini lake.

"The team is studying the health of the lakes in and around the region. The scientists from Japan are also exploring the possibilities of usage of Water Environmental Preservation (WEP) method which will allow us to provide aeration more efficiently," said Lake Development Authority secretary Shirish Kumar.

The team, which is on a five-day visit to the city of lakes, reached here on Tuesday. It will submit its report to the central government mentioning recommendations and suggestions regarding 'health' of the Naukuchiataal, Bheemtal, Saatal and Naini lakes.

Scientific methods such as 'aeration' and 'biomanipulation' are already being used to revive the Naini lake by increasing the amount of oxygen in it. The artificial oxygen supply to the lake which is also known as 'aeration' has improved its health, said Nainital LDA officials.

Some breeds of fish like Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and Mahseer (Tor Neolissochilus) will also be introduced in near future in the lake.
