NAINITAL: The 45-acre golf course in Nainital Raj Bhavan is all set to for a tee-off competition between 116 participants for the 13th Governor's Cup golf tournament. The three-day event will be inaugurated by governor KK Paul on Friday.
After the curtain raiser event on Thursday, along with the display of trophies, Paul said, "Tournaments like this will encourage tourists to visit the state and will help to establish Nainital as an international golf destination. I wish best of luck to all participants."
Connoisseurs of the game from Lucknow, Dehradun, Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Mumbai will try their luck for the top spot on the course.
D S Majethia (94), eldest of the participants, said, "It is really challenging to score here because of the high altitude and the humidity. I feel honoured to participate in this prestigious tournament."
Captain of the Raj Bhawan Golf Club, Col (retd) Harish Sah, described the course details to the audience. "There are 18 holes in the par 61 course. Amateur golfers from the country and abroad will display their acumen in next three days. Out the participants, 10 are women and 14 players are under the age of 19 which is really encouraging for us," added Sah.
He said after two days of play, a cut-off list will be prepared and the winner will be decided at the end of the third day. Rajesh Jairath, appointed as a qualified referee by the International Golf Union with 16 years of experience, has been invited to referee in the tournament. Besides this, staff marshals of the Army and other organizations have also been appointed.
Developed in 1926 and set amidst lush and pristine mixed forest, the Raj Bhawan golf course houses many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. It was thrown open to the general public in 1994.
