Soon, courses for adventure sports at Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University

DEHRADUN: In its bid to promote water sports in the state and open new employment avenues, the Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University (SDSUV) is all set to introduce short and long-term courses to train youths on conducting water sports and adventure activities.

With the governor recently directing the university authorities to start a 'Centre of excellence to develop Tehri Lake and tourism', the varsity has come up with a proposal to start courses spanning three months and six months in adventure sports such as mountaineering, rock climbing, water sports, rafting and underwater games. The proposal has now been forwarded to the higher education, Uttarakhand government, for approval.

Shedding light on the endeavour, SDSUV vice-chancellor U S Rawat said, "Uttarakhand is a tourist state and the initiative will create more job opportunities for the youth. We've drafted an academic proposal and sent it to the higher education department under the Uttarakhand government for approval. Once we get the nod, we may introduce courses from this session itself or by next year."

Rawat said once the course commences, more options of adventure or water games will be introduced for the benefit of students.

Stating that students could go on to become recognized guides in future, Rawat added, "Mishaps occur during adventure games. Once the course commences, candidates will received authentic training and can go on to become recognized guides across tourist centres. This will not only open more job avenues but also increase the safety aspect of these water and adventure sports for tourists."

The vice-chancellor further said once they received a nod from the higher education department regarding funds and infrastructure, they would recruit special inspectors and guides who would teach the students.
