Uttarakhand Assembly session to be held in Gairsain

Despite the objections raised by some Congress and BJP leaders over “unnecessary expenditure” on the temporary arrangements for the proposed Uttarakhand Assembly session at Gairsain, the Harish Rawat government has decided to hold the session from September 28.

Earlier this month, Congress leader and former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna had raised objections to the week-long Assembly session at Gairsain as the temporary arrangements would cost crores of rupees.

Later, Senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition Ajay Bhatt also said that holding the session at Gairsain would be an “unnecessary expenditure.” He said bills of the temporary arrangements for the Assembly session held at Gairsain last year were still pending. “When there are pending bills then what is the need to spend crores of rupees again, that too on temporary arrangements,” Mr. Bhatt said.
He also objected to the use of choppers by the Ministers to attend the Assembly session at Gairsain. “Only if the Ministers travel to Gairsain by road will they see the reality,” he said.

Mr. Bhatt said the crores of rupees could instead be used for the development of the area.

Gairsain, a village in Chamoli district, is in the Garhwal area and lies close to some Kumaon districts. During the Uttarakhand movement, the protesters had proposed Gairsain to be the capital of the State for the inclusive growth of the hilly areas. However, Dehradun was made the capital. Currently, Gairsain is being developed as the summer capital.
