Gasgodam Road area tubewell needs repair

More Uttarakhand News, about Uttarakahnd and more http://uttarakhandnews2k.blogspot.com/

About one month has passed but a tubewell that caters to a large section of population in city's Gasgodam Road area has not yet been rectified.

But there is no alternative arrangements on part of the Jal Sansthan that may help meet the shortage of water, alleged the affected residents.

Since this tubewell also help the farmers meet their irrigation water requirements to a great extent, so the local farmers are not less worried due to prolonged disruption in water supply. In the absence of any alternative arrangements by the Jal Sansthan local residents can be seen roaming around to fetch water and hiring private water tankers. But this kind of arrangement has also been proved very costly affair for the people of low income group.

When the executive engineer, Jal Sansthan, was contacted to enquire about what kind of alternative arrangements have been made to tideover the drinking water crisis in the affected areas, he was not available even on phone. This faulty tubewell belongs to the irrigation department. Though Jal Sansthan is responsible for drinking water supply, following shortage of water in this Gasgodam area, the drinking water supply line has been connected to the aforesaid tubewell so that the water shortfall can be met.

But delay in rectifying the fault, the water supply in the Gasgodam area has been badly hit. To put a faulty tubewell in place is a very time taking process, said AK Sharma, executive engineer, irrigation, while talking to The Pioneer.

"We have been actively working on this tubewell. But due to certain technical reasons it always takes a lot of time to rectify a tube well. While in terai area it takes at least 10 days in rectifying a tube well, in bhawar areas it takes us at least a fortnight.

Apart from some technicalities, paucity of funds is also one of the major reasons in expediting repair works on these electricity driven appliances. According to the concerned authorities out of Rs 2.67 crore demanded by the irrigation department for maintenance and repair of tubewells in three districts of Kumaon including Nainital, US Nagar and Champawat this financial year, only Rs 1.04 crore has been released so far.

However, due to slow pace of release of fund, dues against maintenance and repair of the tube-wells have gone up to Rs 60 lakh, the authorities claimed.

And there are still over a dozen tubewell spreading across three districts including Nainital, US Nagar and Champawat which have been dysfunctional for such a long period, Sharma stated.
