J Dey murder: Did Babloo Shrivastava give murder weapon?

After the seizure of a US-made .32 bore revolver and 20 Czechoslovakian-made cartridges from Chhota Rajan sharpshooter Rohit Joseph alias Satish Kalya, who allegedly shot dead senior journalist J Dey on June 11, the police are looking into how the sophisticated weapon was procured.

During interrogation, the arrested suspects reportedly revealed that Rajan had instructed Kalya to travel to Kadgodam in Nainital to collect the firearm and ammunition for a contract killing.

“The fact that he asked Kalya to collect the weapon from Nainital indicates that the firearm could have been provided by the Babloo Shrivastava gang or Gulrej Khan alias Guddu, a close associate of Rajan,” said a police officer, who is part of the investigation team.

“From the make of the weapon, it is clear that it was not locally made or an easily available firearm. It was brought from outside the country and handed over to the shooters,” the officer added.
Kadgodam in Uttarakhand is close to the Nepal border and members of the Rajan and Babloo Shrivastava gangs are known to operate in that area. They frequently slip in and out of the country through the Uttarakhand-Nepal border, the police claimed.

Babloo, who was once close to fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim, is now one of his staunch rivals. A native of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh and a graduate from the Lucknow University, Babloo reportedly still calls the shots in the underworld.

Intelligence agencies have unconfirmed reports that Babloo owns properties in many parts of the country.

Fired by political ambitions, Babloo had also contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from Sitapur constituency on an Apna Dal ticket.
