PATNA: Uttarakhand governor Margaret Alva, while deliberating on the liberalization, privatization and globalization of education, said here on Friday that education must open minds, unite people, emphasize service and most of all teach young people to love and coexist with people who are different. "They must emerge as confident and courageous patriots who are physically fit, mentally alert and spiritually alive," she said while inaugurating the three-day international conference on global trends in education organized by the Institute of Objective Studies (IOS) here.

She said as per census 2011, the literacy rate in India has increased to 74% with the focus now extending from the three Rs to fourth one, namely retention. However, she said, "The education system in India currently represents a great paradox. On the one hand we have IIMs and IITs, while on the other hand there are hundreds of schools in the country that don't even have basic infrastructure or teachers."

Alva said governments have to make adequate and focused investments in education to ensure that their citizens are equipped to meet the challenges of an ever-expanding marketplace. "It is not just the statistics of education but its content that matters," she added.

In his keynote address Dr Mohd Ghazali Md Noor, who works as senior adjunct at Tindakan Strategi Sdn Bhd, Malaysia, said education is now universally considered to be the next most important investment after health care in any society.

Ghazali said, "Global trend in education is not uniform. It varies in coverage, content quality and access in different societies The developed nations follow a policy of inclusive education with a dominant role of the public authority up to high school level, but private investment on non-profit basis is dominant at the higher educational level."

"India's new economic era requires new supply of its knowledge workforce, service providers and modern agricultural entrepreneurs to meet the increasing sophistication of its new civilization," said Ghazali, a former director of Islamic Development Banks's strategic planning office.

Others who spoke on the occasion included IOS chairman Manzoor Alam and general secretary Z M Khan, reception committee chairman Dr A A Hai, Bihar Human Rights Commission chairman Justice (retired) S N Jha, John Arul Phillips of Asia e-University, Malaysia and former VC Qamar Ahsan.
